Our Salmon has now reached The Redds

Any salmon fortunate to have passed through our river systems evading Seals , other predators , anglers , unfavorable river conditions , Sewage & poachers will by now have reached the Redds (spawning grounds ) and is waiting for the temperature to trigger spawning time.

Back in the day it was common for bailiffs & other fishery interests to "Guard the redds " . You may wonder why ..........Well it's like this with the salmon at it's most vulnerable Some folk will gaff /hook , net the fish at this time ,bit like shooting rats in a barrel . A couple of uses to the poacher but one is "Jam " , made from the salmon eggs , deadly for anglers as bait for trout and the like.

Today does this protection in the early hours still happen ...........Doubt it very much.
