The month ends with just two fish ,several missed but lots of fun had. The boys fished hard but luck deserted them (you need plenty at this game ). Damage to date , two pairs of wrecked waders ,a ripped net , one engine failure and one set of gashed shins , all par for the course ! Finished the set of tides with ITV coast and country coming down to Black Rock . Great to see Bob and matt being filmed together (youngest and oldest ) What a gem we have ! No fishing now until 6
Up at 3am and on the boat by 4am heading for "The Hole" . Five fishermen at 1st light well spread out on a calm spring tide. Richard m . was late and missed the boat but walked out to join us. What a tide six fish spotted and chased , one caught , a 9lb er for Martin. Back to our net house for bacon rolls and coffee . What a life !
A big part of the fishing over the years has been to accommodate journalists, film makers, photographers , authors , researchers, students and really anyone interested in our lave net fishery. Wednesday (the only calm day of the week ) saw Richard Harris and martin helping Francesca with her project . She was well up for a boat trip and managed to get some unique footage of the fishing.
Prior to fishing today a walk to the foreshore. What a mess . Broken bottles etc everywhere , in the rock pools where children and dogs play. A beautiful spot ruined by idiots. Cleaned up as best possible . At fishing time familys with dogs in the pools............... warned them we may not of picked it all up.
With a flat calm tide and no lave net fishing due to the neap tides (typical ) a quick exploratory journey to Denny . Folk law says that men from sudbrook, caldicot and portskewett used to walk here on the big tides in search of eggs many years ago. Richard Morgan and Martin made the long journey from base in Diawl Bach ,she made good ground and got us there and back quickly and safely. most older/local people pronounce the island as "Dinny " although it is spelt Denny .
A very mixed week. Weather and neap tides ruined the first two weeks fishing then a calm two days on reasonable spring tides gave us a chance. A good effort by the boys fishing early mornings ( 3.30 am) and afternoons around work (I take my hat off to them ) saw just reward in the shape of a cracking fish caught by Paul (only his 2nd in 4 seasons ). Fish seen on every calm tide so there are a few about. No salmon fishing now until the 21st due to the neap tides.
First week lost to neap tides and most of the second to strong winds. At last a calm few days to winkle out a salmon or two. Prior to the season plenty of fish on the estuary ,hopes are high we will get a few as the weather settles again !
As the fishing started so did the gales, a few hardy souls still giving it a try though. Richard Harris picked up a mullet in the Gut . Any knock here is normally a salmon ! Better luck next time Rich.
This Monday we meet with Natural resources Wales at Black Rock . This is the 10th and last year of the present agreement forged by the Welsh assembly government and the fishermen and agreed by the Environment agency as sustainable. We have asked to renew the agreement now as we have possible commitments into 2019 and this is causing much uncertainty . The agreement with all its restrictions has actually worked very well with the fishery unlike others thriving and surviving an
