With the season approaching time to reflect on the fishery's rich history and fishermen of the past. Bob, pete and Grantley Leonard , Doug Brown ,Den lee ,Ron Williams, Eggy and Smacker Williams ,William Corbin , Billo Thomas , Bert Beasley , John Harris , Jim Foster, Joe Morse to name a few. We are sure they are and would be proud of our efforts to keep the fishing going for future generations to enjoy.
A few more weeks until the lave net fishing season begins and time for another trip onto the estuary. Gaining confidence on the estuary is a big part of the lave netting and matt the youngest member of the Black Rock lave net fishermen is learning quickly. A beautiful estuary on the surface . This picture shows bag full of sewage articles picked up on our fishing lines yesterday . There must be tons of this in the estuary . A screen would stop this discharge , why would this be allowed these days .
Our lave net fishery featured yesterday on the BBC TV program Escape to the country . Jonnie Irwin presented the program and he was taken fishing on a temporary licence by our fishermen. The feature looked fantastic and was a great advert for the area . Who would not want to live here ! The program can be watched on BBC iplayer , series 17 , South Wales
We didn't expect that ! as the saying goes . Non stop at our display, the interactive parts of the display were non stop and great interest in the rest. The caldicot castle opening was a great hit ,free to the public and very busy. The Lave net fishing season is approaching and people who had not heard of it before were very keen to come down to Black Rock in the season to watch. As the lave net fishing season approaches time to dust off the exhibition equipment . The lave net fishermen take great pride in showing the public exactly what we do and what the fishery is about. The full display has won many awards the last of which was two gold awards at the Royal Welsh show 2016. This pic. shows the boys at Cardiff bay . With the Lave net season just around the corner still time for a crack at the Spring run of fish in the Severn estuary. Some luck with the weather , nice and calm found Paul and Martin fishing Gruggy and the Tanks. Straight on the fish with a great catch of Ray , conger, codling and cod. The codling were feeding on berried crab and small fish on the hard ground.
